Attending my first pediatric hospice and palliative care Christmas party for our Kourageous Kids at Hosparus Health was one of the most endearing and enriching experiences that I have had in my career.
The overwhelming number of amazing volunteers, staff members, and patients and families that gathered to celebrate life and the joy of the holiday season was astounding. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the children and their loved ones as they participated in face painting, cookie decorating, pictures with Santa, playing with the pet therapy dogs, and the opening of their gifts left my heart full of gratitude and love.
Creating moments that matter and everlasting memories is what hospice and palliative care is all about. What a beautiful gift to be able to participate in that! The strength of our families and their siblings and the pure love of our patients throughout the room left me humbled and full of pride to be a part of their lives.
Many of our families spent hours loading and unloading their child and their equipment to get to and from the event. That is a part of their daily normal life, and you would never know it as their smiles lit up the room. Our families, as well as our patients, are true heroes, and to be able to give something back to them is an honor.
Living with a serious or terminal illness as a child teaches you the importance of those simple acts of kindness, laughter, and human connection. I believe that the quality of our lives cannot be measured in day, months, or years but with those moments that matter.
To all of our beautiful patients and families, to all of our dedicated volunteers and staff at Hosparus Health, and to all of our referral sources I wish you a Happy New Year every day of the year! May every day be a new beginning to create those moments that matter.
